Northern Ireland U16 Manager Dessie Curry takes his team to Chester this week for the clash with England in the Sky Sports Victory Shield on Thursday night, kick off 7.40 pm, hoping that history can be repeated.
Four years ago Northern Ireland defeated the home team 1-nil for the first ever success in the competition on English soil.
Scotland currently head the Victory Shield table with a 1-0 win in Waleslast week to add to a rather fortunate 2-1 success at Ballymena. Curry realises that the task facing his team is immense. “Scotland’s success increases the pressure on England for a win over us in their bid to retain the title. On current form there is little to choose between any of the countries. England needed a late goal to defeat Wales while Scotland coach Ross Mathie admitted that his team stole the match at Ballymena” commented Curry.
The Northern Ireland team is bolstered by the return of 3 players, goalkeeper Gareth Deane and defenders Luke McCullough and Ryan McLaughlin, who were not available against Scotland as they had been called up for the Under 17 team which qualified for the elite stage of the UEFA Championship. “Their experience at Under 17 level and the success in Andorra will strengthen the Under 16 side for what will be a tough encounter. Everyone will need to show character if we are to overcome Englandonce again” added Curry.
The game will be televised live on Sky TV.
