NI BOYS BEAT USA IN MILK CUP

Release Date: 29/07/2008

THE Northern Ireland U20 boys got manager Steve Beaglehole’s international reign off to a winning start when they defeated the USA in their Elite Milk Cup opener at Coleraine Showgrounds on Monday night.

Derry City’s James McLean scored the opener on 25 minutes; but an unfortunate own goal by Blackburn Rovers’ Jonathan Flynn just before half-time brought the USA level.

However, the boys in green took the lead again, also from an own goal, courtesy of Ike Opara, with Crusaders’ Jordan Owens sealing the victory for Northern Ireland with a powerful long-range shot.

Result: Northern Ireland 3 – 1 USA.

Next up for the Steve Beaglehole’s team is Belgium on Wednesday night at the Ballymena Showgrounds, kick-off 8pm.
