THE IRISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION has published a book to commemorate the past 125 years, as part of this year's anniversary celebrations
The Irish Football Association ... the 125 years history', written and edited by respected Northern Ireland journalists Dr Malcolm Brodie and Billy Kennedy, and with sponsorship from Nationwide, includes messages of support from FIFA President Joseph Sepp Blatter and UEFA President Lennart Johansson.
Mr Blatter notes that the IFA is one of the four oldest associations in the sport and says: "Since its foundation in Belfast on November 18th 1880 the IFA has had a crucial role in the promotion and development of the game throughout the island and across the globe."
Mr Blatter pays tribute to the late Harry H Cavan who was IFA President from 1958 to 1994 and played a distinguished role on many FIFA committees, finally being nominated FIFA Honorary Vice-President in 1990.
The book, in colour and black and white, was launched at the Europa Hotel in Belfast today (Tuesday 8th November) with IFA President Jim Boyce and the authors in attendance. It looks back at the long and lustrous life of the association, recalling Ulster's contribution to the laws of the game, including the introduction of the penalty kick and the offside rule which were both proposed by Ulstermen.
Legends of the game, past and present, are featured, with contributions from some of today's top Northern Ireland football writers including reflections on David Healy's historic winning goal against England at Windsor Park earlier this year in September.
The book, over 100 pages, costs £10 in hardback and £5 in softback and is available from IFA headquarters at 20 Windsor Avenue, Belfast; at all Nationwide offices within Northern Ireland; and, from 24th November onwards, online at the IFA website www.irishfa.com
