Referee News Update

Tim (26) was promoted to the referees list and David (23) to the list of assistants. Alongside the new officials Arnold Hunter was confirmed as a Category 1 FIFA referee which means more high profile appointments for our officials.

Whilst these fantastic achievements were being confirmed, 18 new referees had started their journey in refereeing. They were busy completing their first 6 games as a “trainee” referee in the Amateur League, Down Area League and South Belfast League to names just a few competitions they are officiating on. For each game they complete their self-assessments and work with an appointed mentor meaning that after 6 games they are prepared for what’s ahead.

In February 2015 3 young officials will visit Liverpool to referee at the Academies of Everton & Liverpool. This is part of a successful exchange with Liverpool County FA and is designed to give experience to three of our most promising officials. Ben McMaster, Shane McGonigle and Niall Gallagher will represent the association in what is a fantastic opportunity,

Although occurring on three very different stages the achievements of all these officials are something they can be proud of. In 2015 the Irish Football Association are looking to recruit approximately 100 new officials across the country. Referee Manager Lee Tavinder explains what the association are looking for. “We are looking for new officials of all ages that have a commitment to our local game. Whether a referees’ ambition is to referee in Europe or to officiate an Amateur League cup final we are keen to hear from them. They must be willing to complete a 12 hour beginners course, pass an exam and basic fitness test and complete 6 games under the guidance of a mentor. That’s when the hard work starts and we’d hope every new referee would develop by attending meetings, keeping themselves fit and committing themselves fully to every game they have”

If you are interested in becoming a referee please email referees@irishfa.com – who knows where it may take you. We are running a number of introductory sessions on Thursday 29th January 2015. Sessions will run hourly from 4pm – 8pm. Please email referees@irishfa.com if you wish to attend.
