GERRY Armstrong, what a worker he is! Striding away there with Hamilton to his right. Norman Whiteside up on the far side of the area .... still Billy Hamilton, he's got past Tendillio.

"And Arconada ............ Armstrong!"

Needs no introduction, does it? Almost twenty-three years on it still brings a lump to the throat, Northern Ireland's single greatest triumph on the football pitch.

Even though Gerry Armstrong's career has taken many twists and turns since that fateful night in Valencia it is for that goal which defeated hosts Spain in World Cup '82 for which he will always be best remembered.

Named 'British Player of the Tournament' he obviously didn't upset the Spanish too much for that goal when, not even a year later, he signed for Real Mallorca spending two years at the club. His playing days also included service at Tottenham Hotspur, Watford and West Bromwich Albion among many others.

Since hanging up his boots he dabbled in the management game before carving out a high profile career as a television pundit and renowned expert on European football.

It is this knowledge which prompted Lawrie Sanchez to ask Armstrong to become his assistant and fulfil a position he last occupied during Bryan Hamilton's tenure.
