Sat, 30 Apr 2005Poland v. Northern Ireland

Second Qualifying Round UEFA U19 Women's Championship at
Poland
3:1 Northern Ireland

PLAYED in the magnificent mountainous Altburon region Northern Ireland began their final group game strongly with Kellie Leyland almost heading the girls into a fourth minute lead with a header from a Rachel Furness free-kick.

However the Poles began to take control of the game after this early scare and duly moved in front on 20 minutes when Bkazeyevska nodded home unmarked from inside the area.

Julie McLaughlin almost restored parity on the stroke of half-time after collecting a Furness cross from the left but was unable to keep her explosive shot on target.

Northern Ireland continued to battle after the break and were rewarded with the fully deserved equaliser on 67 minutes when pressure from Naomh Larkham and Lynne McFrederick forced the Poles into conceding an own goal.

Sniffing victory Northern Ireland surged forward but were rocked barely three minutes later when Poland caught the defence off guard to regain the advantage.

Then, in the 78th minute, Bkazeyevska sealed victory with her second of the game from the edge of the area.
