The NI Umbro Schools Cup has reached the semi finals stage after some fantastic quarter final ties.
The majority of the quarter finals took place on 8th February at the City of Belfast Playing Fields, with NI Manager Michael O’Neill viewing proceedings and making the Semi Final draw. Defending Champions St Columbs College were beaten in extra time but the industrious Boys Model in the Senior Cup. Holy Cross College defeated a strong Bangor Academy side, as did St Louis Grammar over Glengormley. St Josephs College make up the final semi finalists with a convincing 4-0 win over Rathmore.
NI Umbro Youth Cup saw Devenish Colllege defeated St Patricks Grammar (Armagh) in extra time in a very entertaining game in Coagh. SRC Lurgan now meet the Fermanagh men in the semi finals after a convincing win over defending champions Corpus Christi. Holy Cross College were also victorious over St Columbs College and now face SERC (Downpatrick) in the next round.
St Columbs (u14) Umbro Intermediate Cup team are the only defending Champions still left in the competition after a thumbing 5-0 over Lurgan JHS.
St Brigids were victorious in probably the most entertaining game of the quarter finals after a 6-5 win over Our Lady & St Patricks Knock, a game described by St Brigids coach Liam MacAleer as “what schools football is all about, quality football, drama and superb goals.” They now play St Louis Grammar (Ballymena) in the Semi Final at Moyola Park on 1st March, noon KO.
In the Umbro Minor Cup De La Salle knocked out defending champions St Columbs College 3-1 and have been joined in the Semi Finals by Boys Model, Our Lady & St Patricks Knock, and Clounagh JHS with both Semi Finals being played at Solitude on 2nd March.
NISFA Development Officer Conor Marlin commented, “The quarter Finals produced some really good games and I am looking forward to the Semi Finals. It’s great for the young players in the Senior Cup to get to play at Windsor Park and also the other semi finals taking place at other Irish League grounds. Playing in big games and at some of the best grounds in local football will be something the players will remember for a long time. We are very grateful to all the clubs for their support and also Umbro, as always, for their commitment to such a fantastic competition. It’s all building up nicely for the finals day at Ballymena Showgrounds on 25th April.”
