Cookstown’s Ulster Sports Arena was the venue for the Stena Line Irish Sea Ferries Centres of Excellence festival day for girls recently. The girls, aged 11-14, were chosen from each of the four regional centres to participate in the festival day which serves as a way to identify the most talented players in Northern Ireland.
National Women’s Coach Alfie Wylie, was delighted at the success of the event and praised the work being done by the coaches.
He said: “Throughout all of the festival days we have organised over the years, the quality continues to improve each season. There was some fantastic football played at the festival and I must praise the excellent work done by the coaches at the Centres of Excellence and at club level and thank them all of their hard work and commitment. Each centre now has two sessions per week for the girls and they are undoubtedly benefitting from the extra fitness and conditioning work. The football the girls are producing each season keep getting better and better, and this has been evident at the Centres of Excellence.”
The festival day involves each of the four regional squads playing in 9 v 9 games against each other in a competitive environment, from which the best players are selected to represent Northern Ireland at International level.
Alfie continued: “Many of these girls will go on to represent Northern Ireland in the future and we are looking ahead to our U15 Schoolgirls Development Squad who will be participating in a tournament in Wales in April. If the quality we have seen here today is anything to go by, then the future of girls football in Northern Ireland is looking strong.”
