LOCAL KIDS PUT THE FUN INTO FUNDRAISING!

27/05/2008

OVER 700 primary school pupils from the North West area put their best foot forward when they took part in a one mile sponsored walk.

The event raised much needed funds for local children's charity, the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC) during their annual Smyth Toys' Fun Day in St Columb's Park on Friday.

After completing the energetic one mile walk which was started off by the Deputy Mayor of the City, Councillor Patricia Logue, pupils enjoyed a morning of fun including face painting, goody bags, disco dancing, and balloon modelling.  Grassroots  Development Officers, Kevin Doherty and Joe Doherty from the Irish Football Association were on hand to display their goal keeping skills, as kids took their turn shooting penalties against the professionals.  The Derry Children’s Commission also provided a selection of play activities for the kids

The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children would like to thank Smyth Toys and Translink for supporting the charity’s North West Fun Day.  Rachel Burgoyne, Schools and Youth Fundraiser for the NICFC said “Without the generosity and support of sponsors like Smyths and Translink this event simply would not be possible.  The North West Fun Days is a cross community event that not only raises vital funds for local children living with cancer and their families; it also increases awareness of the charity and its services amongst schools, teachers and parents throughout the North West.”

Every week in Northern Ireland two children are diagnosed with cancer. Approximately 500 children across the province are currently in treatment, or post treatment for cancer and another 1500 siblings are living with cancer.  Monies raised will provide practical, emotional and social support to these children and their families.
