Guidance for club Child Welfare Officers
Make your club aware of our top tips for online communication.
Most children and young people will assume they are safe using the internet because they are in their own home or they think they know who they are talking to.
Most of the time this is true – but sometimes this is not the case and helping players in your club be more aware will help them to stay safer online.
The Irish FA recommends you make parents and guardians aware of CEOP’s ‘Top tips for parents /guardians.’ You can down load this information and place it in your next newsletter or simply provide the link to www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents where they can access it themselves. The Irish FA hopes that by raising awareness amongst parents /guardians, they will follow the advice and speak with their child about safer use of the internet and explore the Thinkuknow site with them.
More and more frequently, coaches and volunteers are making use of internet chat areas to communicate with players. Remind your club officials that they need to be mindful of what they are saying, how they are saying it and ensure they are adhering to your club’s Child Protection Policy and are aware of maintaining appropriate relationships with U18s in football.
The use of sarcasm and innuendo is not appropriate - it’s important that coaches, volunteers, officials and medics remember they are in a position of trust and need to be responsible role models.
