Floodlighting Improvement

 Floodlighting Improvement Project

The IFA recognises the significant and immediate need to improve the floodlighting capacity for both sporting performance and health and safety reasons at a number of grounds.

As a result, in March 2008 the Association appointed a firm to undertake floodlighting surveys across the 19 clubs engaged in Domestic Club Licensing.  This provided information on the current provision at grounds and an indicative cost to improve grounds to a standard of 500 lux or 800 lux.
In May 2008 the Club Licensing and Facilities Department undertook an assessment and scoring process to identify a number of clubs which would be supported under a Floodlighting Improvement Project.  Thirteen clubs applied and were ranked in order of need and project outcomes.

The Association has committed funds from both the UEFA HatTrick II Investment Programme and the FIFA Goal Investment Programme to fund seven projects to a standard of both 500 or 800 lux.

Portadown FC, Coleraine FC and Cliftonville FC were the first three clubs selected as a result of the assessment process and the Irish FA has provided funding to complete these projects to a standard of 800 lux.

Portadown FC
The first project to reach completion in January 2009 was Portadown FC.
The total cost of the project was of £230,000 with a grant of £200,000 being provided by the Irish Football Association through the UEFA HatTrick II Assistance Programme.

Coleraine FC
The project at Coleraine FC was completed in March 2009, funded by the Association through the UEFA HatTrick II Assistance Programme, partnership funding from Coleraine Borough Council was also made available to the club to allow the project to be fully realised.

Cliftonville FC
Cliftonville FC was awarded £200,000 from the Irish FA to undertake an 800 lux UEFA standard floodlighting project through the UEFA HatTrick II Assistance Programme.

Institute FC
Institute FC was awarded funding from the Association to complete a 500 lux project.  Chairman of the Institute Football Club Development Committee Robert Ferris stated, “This could only have been achieved by funding from the Irish FA through the UEFA HatTrick funding programme and Derry City Council. “

Glentoran FC
The 800 lux project at Glentoran FC was completed in March 2009. Speaking at the official inauguration of the new floodlights, Glentoran FC Chairman Aubry Ralph stated: “We are delighted as a Club to have been able to avail of the generous funding package provided by the IFA via the UEFA HatTrick II Assistance Programme.  Glentoran FC truly can look forward to a much brighter future!”

Glenavon FC
Funding to complete this project to UEFA standard was provided to the club by the Association through the FIFA Goal Investment Programme.  The project was completed in January 2010.

Newry City FC
The final project to be completed through the Floodlighting Improvement Project is at Newry City FC.  This project has recently been completed and has been supported by FIFA Goal funding.

The Irish FA is actively pursuing funding opportunities for further projects.
